Caring for an older adult is not a one-person job. A strong care team improves safety, reduces stress, and helps everyone feel supported.
Who Can Be Part of a Care Team?
Family members, friends, neighbours, group contacts such as a faith or special interest social groups, medical providers, community support services and professional elder care advisors.
How To Build Your Care Team
Start with a conversation. Discuss what help is needed now and what might be needed later on. Identify who is best positioned to help fill the gaps. Sometimes a family member or friend is suitable, sometimes you will want to hire a professional who has more time or expertise. Try to find the right balance so that no one person is doing more than they can manage long term.
Tips for Caregivers
You don’t have to do it all yourself. Accept offers of help, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask early before burnout sets in. Remember that, as a caregiver, you can support your loved one much better when you are whole and healthy. Strong supports are vital.
