Turning 65 in Alberta comes with more than just a milestone birthday—it also means you’re eligible for the Seniors Alberta Blue Cross Coverage program, provided at no cost by the Government of Alberta, along with potential other benefits. These can go a long way in supporting your health, but many seniors don’t always know the full range of what’s available.
For all of the following benefits you must be:
- Be 65 or over
- Be an Alberta resident and have resided in Alberta for at least three months before applying
- Be a Canadian citizen or have been lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence
- Receive OAS pension and/or meet financial eligibility criteria
Seniors Alberta Blue Cross Coverage
- Prescription Drugs – Coverage includes most medications listed in the Alberta Drug Benefit List. Be sure to ask your pharmacist if your prescriptions are included, and if not, whether there are covered alternatives.
- Diabetic Supplies – Eligible supplies (like test strips and syringes) are included for those with diabetes.
- Ambulance Services – Emergency ground ambulance service is fully covered within Alberta.
- Home Nursing Care – Some in-home nursing services may be covered when prescribed by a physician.
- Preferred Pharmacy Network Discounts – By filling prescriptions at a participating pharmacy, you may access extra savings or added services.
Tips to Use Your Benefits to the Fullest:
- Carry your Alberta Blue Cross card with you at all times so your benefits can be applied directly at the pharmacy or service provider.
- Review your coverage booklet (available online or by request) so you know exactly what’s included.
- Ask questions—pharmacists, doctors, and Alberta Blue Cross representatives can help you understand what’s covered and how to minimize your out-of-pocket costs.
- Combine with other coverage—if you have a private plan or spousal benefits, Blue Cross will coordinate benefits to maximize your coverage.
- When AHCIP records indicate an Albertan will be turning 65, a package is mailed to the address on their AHCIP file
- If they have a proof-of-age document on the individual’s AHCIP file, Coverage for Seniors is automatically added to their account.
- If they do not have a proof-of-age document on file, the individual will need to submit a proof of age document and a complete Proof-of-Age Declaration form.
