Protect Your Smile – Your Health Depends On It
You can’t have good overall health without good dental health. Poor oral health has a negative impact on quality of life.  Mouth pain, missing teeth or infections can influence how one speaks, eats and socializes affecting their physical, mental and social well-being.

There is a close connection between chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and oral health. People with other illness are more likely to have periodontal disease too.  Infected gums are dangerous as infection can spread to the blood stream.  If someone has tooth pain, this can cause nutrition to suffer if it hurts to eat.  Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis or dementia can make maintaining proper oral health difficult.

Common Dental Issues Associated with Aging
  • Darkened teeth may be caused by staining or thinning of the enamel
  • Dry mouth can be caused by age related reduced saliva flow, some medications or radiation therapy
  • Diminished taste can be caused by medications, dentures, disease or just a result of advancing age
  • Root decay can be caused by root exposure from receding gums
  • Gum disease can be caused by plaque, tobacco use, poor fitting dentures, poor diet, certain diseases such as anemia, cancer and diabetes
  • Gum disease can result in tooth loss
  • If teeth are lost and not replaced, the remaining teeth can shift and cause an uneven jaw bone c
  • Lip inflammation can be caused by poor fitting dentures or poor dental hygiene
  • Thrush (overgrowth of fungus candida albicans) can be caused by drugs that affect the immune system
Oral Hygiene Tips for Seniors
  • Twice daily brushing and flossing with fluoride toothpaste
  • Rinse with antiseptic mouthwash once daily
  • Regular cleaning at dental office or though a mobile dental hygienist
  • Regular oral exams even if wearing dentures to check for mouth cancer

Advance Care Planning

We may all experience a time when someone we love has an accident, injury or disease that takes away their ability to speak for themselves. When that happens, would you or your loved ones know what they wanted for care?  Ask the people you love to talk about their care wishes. Put those you love at ease if something were to happen to you.

It’s important to have a will in case of death, and it’s also important to have an advance care plan while you are living, so loved ones and your care team know what you want for medical care while in a hospital if you cannot speak for yourself.

Yes, it’s an awkward conversation for many, but a very important one. Anyone over the age of 18 can have an advance care plan, as it’s not just for people who have already had something tragic happen; it’s for every adult.

Take the guess work out. Take control of the conversation. Take action on your care wishes.

THIRD ACTion Film Festival
Film Festival – Highly Recommended

THIRD ACTion is a local Calgary initiative where my friend and colleague Mitzi Murray has created a film festival that celebrates seniors, elders, those in their “third act”.  It focuses on the accomplishments of older-adults and helps move us towards an age-positive culture shift.   I was lucky to attend an event which previewed all of the films that will be showing this coming weekend.  There were some truly amazing options.

I highly recommend going to the Glenbow Museum this coming weekend to view some of these films. You can get schedule and ticket information from the website

Proactive Seniors – Housing Support

When seniors are either needing or wanting to look for an alternative to living in their home they have a large number options available to them.  There are three main categories of seniors housing from a financial perspective.

1. Subsidized Seniors Housing – for lower income seniors with good health or minimum care requirements
2. AHS Funded Supportive Living and Long Term Care – for seniors with moderate to high health care requirements
3. Private Pay Retirment Residences – Covers most care levels from independent to assisted living and some locations now have enhanced care

There are over 200 options for seniors housing in Calgary and area.  It is very important that the appropriate amount of time and consideration is taken to be sure that a senior (or a senior couple) are matched to the seniors housing options that best suit their needs and preferences.

When the fit is good, seniors can thrive in their new home, when the fit is poor seniors are either unhappy or make multiple moves.

Families spend countless hours trying to research and understand all the different options, we simplify that process because we have researched and toured everything.  We can help ensure seniors who need or want to move, get into the right place for them, the first time!

We Appreciate Your Referrals!
